If you are a novice at flower gardening and want to give it a try, there are a few things that you should know before you begin. The first thing that you want to do is choose the type of flowers you want to plant. There are literally thousands of different types of flowers to choose from.
Perennials: these types of plants are chosen most often because of their versatility; they require very little care and will grow back every year stronger then the year before. There are hundreds of different types perennials, each with brilliant colors and characteristics. Perennials are a bit more expensive then the rest, however the results are worth the extra cost.
Biennials: these plants are gorgeous when they bloom, many of these plants reseed themselves making them comparable to perennials however when you plant these, do not expect to see magnificent colors the first year; it takes a full year before they bloom.
Annuals: just as the name suggests, annuals bloom and then die in the same season; there are varieties of annuals that can withstand the frigid temperatures of winter; it is important that you decide which type of annual that you want. It is also possible to plant annuals for each season you will enjoy the brilliant colors all round.
If you have children in your home, gardening is a great way to spend time together; it is also a constructive and safe activity and you will spend hours of quality time together.
An important factor in gardening is choosing a design; after you have chosen the flowers that you want to plant, create a design for your garden. If you are planting for every season, choose similar plant types and colors you will have incredible flowers all year round.
Before planting, it is important to test the soil; different regions have certain soil types and by testing the soil, you will be able to determine what types of plants will grow best. Testing the soil will also alert you to whether or not your soil is lacking nutrients that will grow healthy beautiful plants.
You can test the soil in a few different ways:

* Send the sample to either a private lab or your county’s extension office.

If your soil is lacking nutrients don’t panic! You can still plant flowers however you will need to prep the soil a little bit. Aerating the soil and mix compost in it will give it the nutrients that it needs, however you can also add grass, leaves, and even fertilizer will produce beautifully bright and colorful flowers.
